Hot off the heels of FINAL KOMBAT, the final championship event of the Mortal Kombat Pro Kompetition, Evo 2024 marks Mortal Kombat 1’s first appearance as a main title in an Evo event. ZEUS, NICOLAS, MKJAVIERMK, SONICFOX, THEMIGHTYUNJUST, and DYLOCK headline the Top 6 tournament, showcasing their unparalleled skill and determination as they fight their way among the best players worldwide.

ZEEUS and NICOLAS kick off the Top 6 with Ashrah and Johnny Cage, respectively. The two players engage in a nail-biting, intense match, showcasing their skills and determination. The back-and-forth nature of the match keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, with each player gaining momentum only to be met with a fierce comeback. This level of competition sets the tone for the rest of the tournament as ZEUSS progressed to the winners final.

MKJAVIERMK and SONICFOX duke it out in the following winners semifinal with Scorpion and Homelander, respectively. It's another tight match with phenomenal performances from both players. SONICFOX built up incredible momentum, taking two games in a row and seemingly anticipating MKJAVIERMK’s actions. After a devastating final game, SONICFOX grasped victory and sent MKJAVIERMK to the losers bracket.

Starting the losers quarterfinal, NICOLAS meets DYLOCH. NICOLAS makes a Baraka switch, and DYLOCH plays with General Shao. We begin to see a familiar theme with the outstandingly close matches in the MK1 Top 6. That said, the tensions haven’t been higher in the losers bracket whenever there are no more second chances. NICOLAS and DYLOCH graced spectators with a final game as the two players went 2:2. After an unsuccessful low Fatal Blow, NICOLAS sent DYLOCH home and moved forward to the losers semifinal.

MKJAVIERMK and THEMIGHTYUNJUST close out the losers quarterfinal. This matchup between Scorpion and Homelander played out differently than the match against SONICFOX at the start. THEMIGHTYUNJUST was more reserved in their playstyle than SONICFOX’s aggressive nature. This appeared to give MKJAVIERMK the space they needed to take ownership of the first game. It seemed that THEMIGHTYUNJUST only needed time to warm up as they turned the tide in their favor. MKJAVIERMK appeared to run out of steam towards the end of the match, and THEMIGHTYUNJUST secured a decisive victory to move forward to losers semifinal.

Onward to the winners final, we have SONICFOX and ZEEUS. SONICFOX switches out their Homelander for Sindel, and ZEEUS sticks to Ashrah. SONICFOX took the first two games, but it was still an incredibly close matchup between the two players. ZEEUS wasn’t going down without a fight as they attempted to adapt to SONICFOX’s pressure. As close as each round was, SONICFOX progressed to the Grand Final 3:0, sending ZEEUS to the losers semifinal.

THEMIGHTYUNJUST and NICOLAS commenced the losers semifinals. NICOLAS brought out Rain, and THEMIGHTYUNJUST followed up with a switch to Ermac. When it appeared to be a decisive win for NICOLAS after two straight games, THEMIGHTYUNJUST returned to win a game themselves. Still, NICOLAS’ Rain was relentless, securing them their victory and their path to the losers final.

ZEEUS and NICOLAS reunited in the losers final, maintaining their earlier selections of Ashrah and Johnny Cage. ZEEUS appeared determined to make their way back to the winners side, claiming a definitive win in the first game. After a close Game 2, NICOLAS came back to even the score and continued that momentum to claim Game 3. NICOLAS achieved their revenge after their first loss to ZEEUS in the winners semifinal, as they progressed to the Grand Final with SONICFOX.

As a runback from the World Finals, SONICFOX and NICOLAS engage in a Johnny Cage mirror match. Right off the bat, NICOLAS launches an onslaught to take the first round. SONICFOX  returned to take a near-perfect round for themselves. Still, NICOLAS claimed the first game. This is clearly a competition between two incredibly talented individuals.

The two players countered each other expertly, exhibiting a competition that felt almost dancelike. NICOLAS brought the score 2:1, and a reset felt all but assured. SONICFOX seemed to turn the tide with a Fatal Blow to punish NICOLAS’ whiff. The tournament was then brought 2:2. SONICFOX built up momentum to tournament point, quickly taking the next round against NICOLAS, but the game wasn’t over yet. With a mere pixel between the two players, SONICFOX claimed the ultimate victory, becoming the first Mortal Kombat 1 Evo Champion and also earning their seventh Evo title.
